How does the organic rank flywheel work?
Why sales beget sales on Amazon, and how advertising kick-starts the wheel.
Amazon ranks products by what sells. Sales velocity and conversion rate drive search position, a higher position brings more visibility, more visibility brings more sales, and the wheel turns. Reviews, price and availability feed the conversion side of that loop.
This is the real job of advertising early in a product’s life: not profitable clicks, but purchased velocity that earns an organic position the ads no longer have to pay for. Judged on immediate return alone, launch campaigns almost always look worse than they are.
The flywheel also runs backwards. A stock-out stops velocity, rank decays, and when stock returns you are buying back a position you already owned. Availability is not an operations metric on Amazon: it is a growth metric.
